Rhoderunner
One of my three - Pablo - is an incredible escapologist. And always finds ways to escape from our eglu + chicken netting. I clipped her wings several weeks ago and it seemed to do the trick... until today that is when I looked out to survey some unexpected garden damage! How often should I be clipping them? moochoo
They should on require re-clipping after a moult. On average once a year. Is she jumping onto low objects to get higher? That's the usual technique for escapology.
Rhoderunner
She was escaping from the eglu jumping onto a wall and walking along it, but I netted up over the wall. Now she's jumping from the eglu over the chicken netting which is quite some distance away! I've just moved the eglu closer to the (netted) wall and hoping that does the trick. Thanks! dame egna
You say you clipped her wings - have you clipped both or just one?
Hen Watch
All my girls have 1 clipped wing (to unbalance them for take off). I've had them for 2 years and they've not had a full moult yet and so their clipped feathers remain. My lot will still get over my netting if I give them a launch pad and I have to be careful to move the eglu at least 1.5 meters from the netting or else they will escape. Lewis
I've had mine for a couple of years, and only clipped their wings when the first came. I think they're too fat to fly off , but they haven't had a proper full moult yet.
Rhoderunner
I did only clip one wing on each. Thanks for letting me know I don't need to clip again for a while. I've moved the eglu further from the netting, so fingers crossed that works. The other two don't seem to mind, but Pablo is a bit more adventurous! Too fat to fly! I like that. Guess I don't need to feel guilty about feeding them all my leftovers then!!!
