Ness3103
trying to plan my wir, which is going to be quite big, and i need to keep costs down as much as poss (dh recently made redundant) but also want to have a safe environment for my girls (when i get them) i've just found cage and aviary mesh, it's galvanised, in wickes. would this be any good, maybe as a temporary measure until i can afford the weldmesh? also what type, size of wood do you use to build your runs? i was given the money for an eglu for my 40th birthday but OH says he wants the wir sorted before we get it i can understand his point. because i want 4 chickens and i couldn't let them free range in our garden as there are loads of holes in fences etc at the moment. and it would be too cramped in the eglu run for them all day. Yolky
Best/cheapest place for wire is www.hillsofdevon.co.uk
Guest
Hi I got my mesh from a local fencing company and next time will use Hills of Devon as they sell the big rolls too and u wont find a better price on line or ebay etc. Hills have great reviews on this forum So many places ie like wickes etc only sell the smaller rolls. Worth paying for the bigger one i thinkits 30metres?? good luck indie
Redwing
I agree with Indie, a small roll of wickes wire won't go far, they are usually 6 or 10m and also don't usually tell you the guage of the wire, you need 19g or LOWER to keep a fox out (the lower the number the stronger and thicker the wire) Hills of Devon is very good, people don't always want 30m of wire but there is a market for the excess so you can claw some money back I think I used 2"x0.75" wood for the panels and 2x2 for the uprights, I added 3x0.75 boarding around the bottom. Take a look at the WIR thread at the top of the page for ideas someone got ready made panels off ebay for a very good price if you don't fancy making your own, Bantambabe made a good run quite cheaply, I will see if I can find the thread for you Edit: here you go viewtopic.php?t=38394

Ness3103
thank you all for your help. i'm going to use Hills. my dad designed the run for me today and is going to work out how much it'll all cost. it's handy cos he's a carpenter/joiner. i'm so excited i wish it could be done right now
twopoke
prices there dont look bad. i got 5/6m off of ebay (actually to keep chickens off of the veg garden) it works great but really dont go too far. ide say get 30m buy too much and can sell excess, buy too little and youll have to pay for some more with p&p or youll end up getting stuff that dont match!
