Chicken poo and the garden

Recommended Posts

One of the benefits of keeping chickens will be the lovely chicken poo, I'm sure! We've got an allotment and quite a bit tht would benefit from it at home too. Do I need to let it rot down (if so, how long does it take roughly? and what is the best way to store it? I dn't have room for a conventional compost bin at home) or is it ok to go on fresh?

I think its a bit strong 'raw' you can use it on currants though - they can handle it!

Some people on here lob it straight on the flower beds but I wouldnt put it on veggies unless it had been rotted down

You might JUST get away with digging it in to vacant beds over winter but only just

I put mine in the compost bin, mixed with grass clippings/veg waste - it should be fine after about six months. If you've got some spare bits on the allotment, i.e. you're not planning to grow veg in them for the next few months, then you could just dig it straight in there and leave it to rot. It's a bit 'warm' for tender plants and seedlings, and can burn them.
