what too get!! ducks or chickens????

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Can you advise me on whether I should get ducks or chickens. I would love to keep a few ducks but believe they can be very messy. I don't know what to! I am now concidering chickens, and their eggs would be great, as I don't like duck eggs. What are the advantages & disadvantages of keeping both. Please help

I'd love to have ducks but I heard they were messy and noisy too - so we have chickens instead (although the duck's day will come, maybe when we've moved to somewhere with a bigger garden and further away neighbours :shh: ). The chickens are great :D

I would love some ducks and maybe one day when we have some land I will get some. I wouldn't have some in my garden because although it isn't small (90footish) I think too small for ducks and also too urban. My friend has a duck in with her chooks and she told me not to get one as they are messy, she has to clean her eglu out daily because of the mess.

I do highly recommend chooks though, they are such wonderful characters and the eggies are delish.

Years ago we kept two Aylesburys. Although they were cute, their droppings smelt and ducks are scavengers and make a terrible mess. Hens are more fun. Also, I personally think hens engage more with humans. They are very curious and nosey, wanting to know what you are doing all the time! All my hens have different personalities which is very interesting, they are also a close knit flock....very community minded. The eggs are delicious too. :)

I have three chickens and there is poo but its controlable. The only duck experience I have is when we looked after our friends two.

Put it this way, they were called Delilah and George but my dad renamed them due to the amount of poo they made - Happy and Cr***y (it rhymes).

Sorry mods if this isnt allowed.
