Leicester_H
Hi Please read http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=43003as background to this. Chikki had not laid an egg for over a week now. She keeps going and sitting in next box for 20 mins (or so) and then comes out - but no egg. They have both been producing messy runny green droppings - I assume through eating too much grass ?? - so I'm now not letting them out for a few days. How can I tell if she's egg bound - would she still be able to pass droppings ?? Having tried Zolcal D for a week, I don't want to mess her around with more chemicals unless necessary. Otherwise, she seems fine in herself (as does Boo) Do I need to do anything or is she just being a chicken ? Any advice/ thought gratefully recieved. Thanks, H
Egluntyne
I'd be inclined to worm her with Flubenvet, Hazel. Article on egg binding **here**
Leicester_H
Hi I did wonder about that - but it seems to have started when I gave them the Zolcal D - so i didn't want to mess them around with more 'chemicals'. She doesn't seem to have any of the symptoms ?? Symptoms.Miserable appearance Ruffled feathers Rapid breathing Hunched posture Only sysmpton is - no eggs !! I have flubenvet so could try that. Egluntyne
Messy runny green droppings can indicate worms too.

Budgies
If she's only doing it for 20 minutes each day, she's probably just being a chicken. However I would ask is she making egg laying noises? Does she seem convinced she's got an egg coming? That's how my chicken was when she developed egg peritonitis and she kept thinking she was laying, but the yolks were going the wrong way and getting lost inside her. She was going into the nesting box for ages at a time though definitely over an hour, 20 minutes sounds pretty quick. Have you checked her abdomen, and made sure she doesn't feel like she's got any fluid building up? I too would think worming is the best place to start, but just keep an eye. Leicester_H
Hi They have been wormed. No more runny green droppings. Boo is fine .... BUT chikki is not her usual self. She was like this once before, no apparent reason, then came good. We are getting about 5 eggs a week - BUT now not sure if they are all from Boo or if some are from Chikki (as they look similar but some are distinctly thicker shelled than others). Chikki is sitting hunched up most of the day - but picks up if I go out to talk to them. She wanders around the lawn more slowly than usual, but is eating the grass. She only pecked a little at their treat yesterday (some lettuce leaves). Although when I blew the treat whistle she 'flew' across the garden to get it !! She seems to have lost a FEW of the tiny feathers around her comb. I have only seen her do 2 watery droppings in the last few days (obviously, I haven't been watching 24/7). Am going to examine her for lice etc this afternoon but no obvious signs. Its a bit like she's depressed and just can't be bothered at present. She seems to be eating and drinking. Any ideas PLEASE ? Thanks, H
Budgies
Did you feel Chikki to see if she feels as though she has fluid on board? If you feel sort of behind her legs going up towards her vent gently, you'll know whether she feels swollen. What did you worm them with? Some wormers are much more effective than others - the favourite seems to be Flubenvet. Lice and mites in particular are quite hard to detect - lice run across the chicken's skin as you part the feathers and mites don't live on the girls at all but come out at night to feed on the chicken, so it's worth a thorough check and treating for these things anyway in the absence of anything else. As it's been going on for a while, I would be inclined to seek the advice of a vet if it continues.
