The MIL & FIL have offered to purchase a Christening cake for Isabelles special day so im looking for inspiration as to how it should look

 

The theme in her nursery is Humphreys Corner but im unsure about whether i should have a more religious theme.

 

Any ideas would be most welcome.

well, I made all the christening cakes for my children. I'm no expert.

 

I just iced fruit cakes simply and decorated them with stick on decorations - pink for the girls and blue for the boy. I then bought a nice decoration for the centre of the cake from a proper cake deco shop. My eldest had a white swan with pink feathers on its back and a little baby sitting on them. It looked nice at the time! The girls all had a big pink ribbon tied around their cakes and my son had a blue one.

 

So - my vote would definitely be for something simple and probably not themed at all. I think this reflects the innocence and purity of a baby.

I think that simple, white iced cakes (with a few icing fancy bits around the sides) look lovely. You can then have words piped on top without the cake looking too busy. My friend had something like this for her baby's cake and had his name piped on the top. But you must go for whatever takes your fancy! There are zillions of beautiful cakes out there

My mum used to ice all family cakes, weddings, christenings etc.

 

For christening cakes she used to use an eggshell with a quarter cut out, to make a shape like a baby's cradle with a hood - hard to explain on here, I hope that gives you the idea though. Then you pipe icing rosettes round the cut edges to disguise them, I can't remember now but I think she used to pipe icing rosettes to make a 'quilt' in the cradle.

 

She did it because that's what she'd learned from her mother who was a professional cook, but it seems very appropriate for an Omlet baby - you could select one of your nicest, shiniest eggs! I'm not quite sure how you cut it, that might be the awkward bit.

we had a cake that looked like a wicker toy box with toys spilling out of it on the the table and half out of the basket - all edible! We loved it, but it isn't a traditional look.

I've done loads of christening cakes, every one different, some austere, some wildly frivolous, (drunken teddy bears' picnic!), It's entirely up to you, enjoy your choice, as from then onwards, your beloved offspring chooses(volcanoes, spiders, R2D2, 3d panda, squirrel.......the challenge is endless!!

I dont do them for a living, they take hours, and no one would pay for the time, but I love doing them, I find they are really good for my soul and stress levels!!

Yes its all sorted now.

 

10 inch square white cake with small building blocks on it in shades of pink & purple spelling out her name, the date written underneath in icing and a small cross. Large white ribbon round the edge with a smaller deep pink in the middle of that.

 

Its plain but we like it

It appears we are only allowed to choose 1 hymn so we have opted for the traditional family one - Immortal Invisible.

I really did want 'Be still for the presence of the Lord' too but oh well, in the words of The Stones - you cant always get what you want!

The eggshell is a lovely idea. Just as a variation on that thought maybe you could make small white chocolate egg in a mould and cut a quarter out to do the same thing? To make a baby to go in it would be easy - there are various moulds available - the two shops I use a lot are www.design-a-cake.co.uk and www.lindyscakes.co.uk

 

I have a dedication cake due at the end of the month and around the outside just to add some intrest whilst keeping it simple I like to add a 'wave' around the bottom in a colour that matches the theme. I always keep christening/dedication cakes very simple as babies are very pure and innocent and I keep that in mind.
