Dodge77 Posted May 7, 2009 Share Posted May 7, 2009 Have just been up to let the chooks have 1/2 rummage before bed and Geri wouldn't come out - she is usually the first one racing for the door gobbling all the treats up but she wouldn't move at all. Sorted the other chooks out and then went abck to her and she had her head hidden under her wing just standing there - this is so not right for Geri. Have brought her in the house and made her a little bed up in a box in the kitchen. Have tried to give her some warm mash, some pellet, some warm water but she won't touch anything - so so worried please help - am getting a bit scared and panicky now Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Chickens DO stand with their head underneath a wing for a nap, but you know your own chickens and if it's out of character for Geri then you are right to be worried. You have brought her in where you can keep an eye on her, which is good. Could you examine her vent and crop to see if there is anything wrong? Is she laying/eating/pooing normally? Is she unusually light in weight? Do you have a good chicken vet you can take her to? It is worth bearing in mind that chickens can have 'off days' just like anyone else, and she may just go back to normal. Also that seriously ill chickens can hide just how ill they are for ages, but then go downhill and die very quickly, but that wouldn't be your fault. Don't want to stress her by using a syringe yet will have to see in the morning how she is. She laid this morning and has been mooching round the garden today as normal but something changed this afternoon and i'm not sure what. If she hasn't perked up and eaten properly tomorrow I would get her to a vet. She can't go too long without eating and drinking. chixandthecity Posted May 8, 2009 Share Posted May 8, 2009 My top chicken was off colour all over the bank holiday weekend. Looked like she was at death's door on Monday! Anyway, turned ot she was trying to pass a strange egg. Once she got that out of her system, she perked up and seems fine now. We were really worried though! Poultry vet gave her antibiotics anyway and we have wormed them all this week. Keeping her stress to a minimum will surely help. Dodge77 Posted May 8, 2009 Author Share Posted May 8, 2009 Shes picked up a little this morning - no eating but she had a good old drink. She's in the nest box now (she put herself in there) so maybe it is a softie. She's clean and pooing normally, no rattles or sniffles but she has always been the smaller of all the girls despite eating like a feathered horse. Shes done really well since we got her 5 weeks ago - she was the baldest but has re-feathered nicely.
