Hi,

 

Not sure whether this should be here or in 'All things nice'.

 

I'm looking for inspiration for a birthday cake. Would like to do a chicken shaped cake. I don't want a molded one. Just can't quite get my head around how to shape one. Has anyone else tried and have a photo of their cake? You'll be making a 3 year old's (and her Mum's) day if you have!

why dont you try looking for one of the sewing templates and cutting the shape out of a square cake

 

or base the cake on one of those retro 80's egg baskets (like they used to use in the programme Bread )

This is one that I made for my ED's 14th birthday.

 

Not the best, I was relieved to see that it wasn't on Christian's list but it gives an idea.

 

I made 2 chocolate cakes in 8" sandwich tins then covered one in chocolate buttercream and cut the other one into the various shapes for head, wing and tail, then covered the lot with more buttercream and chocolate sprinkles. I used Matchmakers for the legs and marzipan mixed with red food colouring for the comb and wattles.

Chickencam, that's a fab cake! I would love it if someone made me a chicken cake like that

Thank you everyone for the inspiration! The posh chicken might be attempted when I have time on my hands (when the kids leave home). I think yours is great chickencam. I think that's what I'll try. Maybe have a spotty chicken though as my kids think that birthday cakes have to have lots of smarties on top!!

You could use a brown smartie for the eye and loads on the wings and body etc sounds great to me.
