Feeder doors keep closing when I walk away

I use diatom everywhere in my eglu and dust baths but i found lice crawling under both wings on one of my bantams. I used diatom powder straight away on her and all of the others. I ordered xeno 200 last night which is going to take 48 hour to arrive. However i did a complete clean this morning even though i do it every sunday. I looked under wings again AND THE LICE HAVE GONE !? has the diatom got rid of them ?

Diatom dries out the crawlies by damaging their protective layer I think so yes it may have done the trick

 

Xeno 200 will get rid of any left hidden and keep the hen protected

Thanks redwing. does xeno have egg withdrawal period ? I was planning on spraying under the wings and back of neck, is this right ? I'm worring about all nasties more now. I use red mite powder every where in the house but not on the birds. Wolud it be good practise to powder girls with this every few weeks too ? Sorry for all the questions.

Diatom is more effective than red mite powder, I use the latter as a deterrent only.

 

Xeno 200 *not licenced for use on poultry in the UK* is applied to the skin at the back of the neck every 6 weeks or so. It enters the bloodstream, so an egg withdrawal period of 7 days from dosing is recommended. It doesn't get rid of Northern Fowl Mites though, so be sure that you know what you're treating, see my thread here for guidance.

It is useful and if applied reglularly is a good defence against the blighters if you prefer not to use a chemical treatment.

I've just had alook at your other thread. i'm convinced that its lice. They were easy to see creapy crawlies, but i'm not sure if brown or grey. no dirty nickers, just lice under both wings. Thank you for advise.

They are quite different as you can see from the pictures. Lice are definitely brown rather than grey.

 

Have a good look in the fluff around her vent as that's where they really like to congregate. Lice are far easier to get rid of than mites. Mites can live in the hosuign as well (although NFM can't live for as long off the host as red mites) so treat the lot if you have NFMs.

How often does diatom have to be used when lice are found to get rid ? I'm not sure of the egg cycle in lice.

If you have an infestattion, then you will need to dust or spray weekly and if you're using Xeno 200 on an exisiting infestation then I'd recommend also dusting or spraying them to be sure to get rid of the lot including any new lice that hatch.

 

As with headlice, they are remarkably tenacious and it only needs a few to be left, some hot weather and they're all back again.

 

Just a thought - do your girls have a dust bath? It's great for getting rid of bugs and you can add Diatom or Red Mite powder to it.

My three large fowl have a dust bath of their own with diatom and soil. It was a must as there run base is concrete. My bantie chicks have a plant pot dust bath but my other banties (with the infected pullet) are on soil topped with rubber chippings and they dig a hole to dust bath but they do it in different place so i dont put diatom in for them. Maybe this hasn't helped !? Thats a job for the weekend i think. i love an excuse to shop.
