clark+hyde
Hello We've got 10 hens and have had them for about 4 months... One has developed a runny nose recently - about 10 days ago. She's eating fine and still running around with the rest of the girls, but recently her nostrils have been getting very blocked (we clean them for her in the morning and at night) and now she has started sneezing and making a wheezing sound. She is going to the vets later on today. Any clues or hints as to what to do. I don't want the other hens to be catching it. Any help will be most welcomed Thank you! ellisyellis
hi, sounds like a common cold. try giving her citricidal or a supplement like poultry spice to help her. it normally passes just like our colds do but a bit of tlc would help. maybe some warm food on a cold day etc. x
podstable
I think you need to exclude Mycoplasma infection so very sensible to visit vet!
The Dogmother
I think you need to exclude Mycoplasma infection so very sensible to visit vet! I agree, there's a lot of it around. Listen to her back between the wings; if it's bubbling or wheezing then she needs to go to the vet.
teee
Hi, My girls arrived on the 20th may, Hilda has had a dirty nose since she has arrived..looks like dirt stuck to one on her nostrils, i have been cleaning it of, i just thought she was a messy eater and in all the dirt,(its not been every day), but after doing some research on here i think she may have a slight cold as i hear the odd sneeze, she is eating well and running around with Matilda , she looks bright, and is cleaning herself would you suggest giving her `Citricidal` first to see if it clears up if so how long should i give it to her before taking her to vets..... Many thanks, look forward to some advice....
Egluntyne
I'd give it for a week. If she show signs of worsening, ie discoloured gunge, facial swelling, or a bubbly discharge from the eyes within that time....then take her to the vet anyway. They get allergies just as we do, so it might be just that.
