Hi - I'm not sure if this has been asked before or not, but is it safe to eat soft shelled eggs or would you just pop them in the bin? I just wasn't sure if there would be any contamination of the egg without its usual hard exterior to protect it.......

Hi chocolatedog, I have eated the only one which I saw laid & literally whipped it indoors, broke the membrane & scrambled it...........it was yummy I have salvaged a couple of others & scrambled them for the chooks...they didn't stay around very long!

 

Most of ours are either mashed into the hemcore so would be a bit crunchy or drop through into the poo tray and I'm not even going there !

 

*whispers quietly* we aren't getting so many softies since we swapped to the BHWT feed, not even one a day, which is great as a week or so ago I had 3 softies in one day !!! I'm still using up the Spillers stuff, so they aren't on full ex-batt rations yet, but will be soon

Hi I am getting soft egg and like yo do chose which ones I would eat. What is BHWT feed please? thanks indie

The BHWT feed is made by Allen & Page, and specially adapted for exbatts but I use it for my non exbatts and they love it. We do not have so much wastage and we are getting a lot more eggs.

Oh thanks I will try to buy some as one of mine is laying soft shells. I have increased grit etc so will give that a go and mine do waste their layers pellets

I ate a softie today . It crushed a bit as I picked it out of the nestbox so I brushed the easibed off and had it poached for my lunch .
