Newbie with Questions!!

Recommended Posts

Right chicks are here and in their house, 3 Silkies and 2 Sussex. They are 8 weeks old. I have been feeding them the pellets I was told to, sorry not sure on the name and obv giving them clean water every day, should I be feeding them anything else?? Are they getting everything they need just from the pellets?!

Do I need to get them vaccinated against anything at all? or worm or spray for mites etc?!

I let them into their run when i leave for work in the morning then as soon as it starts getting dark they go in on their own so i just go out and shut the door. This all just seems to easy at the moment!! My neighbours cats are hanging around alot which is starting to annoy me as they go straight back in the house at the first sign of a cat! mine arent bothered by them at all but these seem to have an obsession with my chicks!

Any other advice welcome as im totally new to all this and would love to hear how you all do things! Oh i need to treat the house for red mite and the powder is on the way as is stalosen but if anyone knows of anything better please tell me!

Thanks for reading all this! :D

Hi glad to hear your chooks have got the hang of going to bed. Continue feeding growers pellets until they're around 16-18 weeks old then swap to layers pellets. My personal choice would be to leave treats such as veggie s"Ooops, word censored!"s, corn, etc until they're laying so that they eat enough of their pellets to get good nutrition.

I would use a specific red mite powder or diatomacous earth (both available through the Omlet shop) to deter red mite.

I wouldn't worry about the cats the chickens will soon stand up to them. Happy chicken watching!

Thanks for the answers! it just seems way too easy at the moment!!

I pout some photos on here the other day in this forum, called pics of my chicks! they are a bit bigger than those pics now so will try and take some more tonight and upload them tomorrow!! they are really cute and are loosing their baby feathers and looking more like Silkies now! the Sussex are more outgoing and brave and are the first to come out the house each morning! it almost looks like the Silkies throw him out to check whats going on! they are so funny to watch!!
