Couple of questions about hatching

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

We were going to hatch some chicks a couple of months ago, but ended up getting 2 POL

Well we are moving to Llandudno,North Wales in a few months, and my mum said i could give it a go!

Well i have a couple of Questions

How/what is the best way to turn eggs and how many times?

How old should they be when they no longer need and heat lamps?

What is the best feed, Medicated,Organic, ect.

What age can they live out doors?

We are getting an incubator delivered in a few days and my mum said she will get me the eggs for my birthday!

But before i put the eggs in the bator, I will ask the Welsh mountain zoo if they will take/cull any males chicks for me, (mum thinks they will as they have gators & massive snakes)

Also would this be OK as a brooder?

I have 2 of them (one being used for a hermanns Tortoise and the other is in the shed)the corners of them are also curved.

Oh and i would love a blue or green egg laying chook, so if anyone can name and friendly breeds that would be great. (my sis is also bugging me to ask about Gold Laced Wyandottes)

Thanks in advance,

P.S, Sorry for the long post

Hi all,

Well we are moving to Llandudno,North Wales in a few months, and my mum said i could give it a go!

Well i have a couple of Questions

How/what is the best way to turn eggs and how many times? I think its 5 times a day that is ideal, I am turning mine 3 as I am not always in, it has to be an odd number, I read that you need to rock the eggs so turn over one way then on the next turn turn back so you are not twisting the egg round and round so I am following that advice, I marked an X and an O on each side of my eggs and an arrow to remind me which way to turn them so I always know they have been turned and which way to turn. You stop turning at day 18 for normal chickens eggs - Bantams are earlier I understand

How old should they be when they no longer need and heat lamps? mine have come off heat between 6-7 weeks but from week 2 I start raising the lamp up and later from week 4-5 turning it off in the day (I have only raised two lots of chicks so far but this worked for me)

What is the best feed, Medicated,Organic, ect. I fed medicated but that doesnt mean its the best

What age can they live out doors?

Also would this be OK as a brooder?

If its got a hatch in the top it will be fine as you can hang the lamp through it, of its doesnt you may be stuck as the lamp needs to be quite low to start with. You might want to put them in a smaller cardboard box within the brooder for the first few days so they dont ahve the room to wander off from the lamp
