WitchHazel
Hello all With our table birds approaching their fate, we've been thinking about what to next (assuming we carry on). We've decided we'd like to have a mix of Dinner and Egg birds on the allotment, and we'd like to raise a dual purpose breed for this, I was thinking Sussex. To get us started, I was considering buying some fertile eggs when one of my own Girls goes broody, and attempting to hatch them under her. We'd then want to move the chicks (but not my Girl) to the allotment to fnish raising them; the boys wiould be destined for the table, and the girls would be for eggs. What sort of age would the chicks need to be for me to take them from mum and put them in their new home? I want to give Mum time to teach them stuff. Any help gratefully received. Egluntyne
Generally the mother will lose interest in the chicks at about 5/6 weeks.
WitchHazel
Thanks for that Egluntine. That's younger than I anticipated, so that's good news.
