how often should I change the woodchip?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Random question. My four lovely ladies are in a fixed run (with free range time too) on a thick layer of woodchip. There never seems to be hardly any poo in the run, as they're so busy digging around that I guess it gets mixed in. It's part covered, so does sometimes get a bit soggy, at which point they seem happy enough to go and dry off in the covered half. If it 'looks' clean enough, should I keep changing the woodchip, for health reasons? Don't know if things might be breeding in there. So far I've just been adding to it, as it gradually disintegrates. Is there another powder that I should be shaking into it? Redmite powder as well as the house? What do you think?

I shake a bit of Stalosan F over my woodchip now and again - its a powdered disinfectant, BioDry is a similar one

My Eglu run is covered and the last lot of woodchip lasted about 7 months but the stuff on the bottom was practically composted when I dug it all out

Hi, good question.... so is it safe to yse this stuff for long periods of time :?: and if using stalosan f or biodry how frequently should you be renewing the chippings :?: , and is it best for them to be on slabs or grass :?::?: so many questions, :? new to all this if you had`nt guessed

I think it's best to use something like Stalosan F or Biodry if you are not removing the poo to prevent infection. Chicken infection passed on by faeces was why chickens got put in cages. :(

Sunlight helps. :D

The manufacturers say its safe for chickens and to use it weekly with additional amounts if introducing new stock. :?

Don't know if there is a right time to change chippings. I left mine for 3 months but some have left them a lot longer and some change every couple of weeks.

I changed them at 3 months because I felt there was as much poo as woodchip and it was winter so I couldn't wash and dry it.

Slabs or grass is up to you you'll get different answers from everyone. Mine are on slabs because they were there and the rest of the garden is a slope well the bit I'm allowed to use. :D
