Calling all science teachers! Periodic table song needed

Recommended Posts

Der has to learn the 1st 20 elements in the periodic table.

My post is actually too late as he is being tested on them today :lol:

But when I was at school we had a song that sung them all, to a Gilbert & Sullivan tune, & it made it dead easy to remember the elements in order.

This morning I have googled the song, but only come up with one that is to the same tune but the elements aren't in the correct order as they are in the table.

Anyone have a link to it, please?

It's not a song but I used to the two Russian ballet dancers to remember the symbols if it's any help:

HHeLi BeBKNOF and his partner NeNaMgAlSiPSClArKCA

pronounced as Huh HeeLee Beb Kuh Noff, Nena MugAl Sip Scl Ark car

I can't believe I still remember it after so many years.

I hope this makes sense  Ignore me if it doesn't

It is the Elements song by Tom Lehrer and it's sung to, I *think* 'The very model of a modern major general' by Gilbert and Sullivan. I have it somewhere on my computer!

It doesn't include all the elements as it only gets about halfway through the lanthanides as they were the only ones discovered at the time but it does include all of the well-known ones :)

The lyrics:

There's antimony, "Ooops, word censored!"nic, aluminum, selenium,

And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium

And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium,

And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium,

Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium

And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium

And gold, protactinium and indium and gallium (inhale)

And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium.

There's yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium

And boron, gadolinium, niobium, iridium

And strontium and silicon and silver and samarium,

And bismuth, bromine, lithium, beryllium and barium.

There's holmium and helium and hafnium and erbium

And phosphorous and francium and fluorine and terbium

And manganese and mercury, molybdinum, magnesium,

Dysprosium and scandium and cerium and cesium

And lead, praseodymium, and platinum, plutonium,

Paladium, promethium, potassium, polonium, and

Tantalum, technetium, titanium, tellurium, (inhale)

And cadmium and calcium and chromium and curium.

There's sulfur, californium and fermium, berkelium

And also mendelevium, einsteinium and "Ooops, word censored!"elium

And argon, krypton, neon, radon, xenon, zinc and rhodium

And chlorine, carbon, cobalt, copper,

Tungsten, tin and sodium.

These are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard,

And there may be many others but they haven't been discovered

We went round the class making up a stupid sentence, the words of which began with the correct letters. By the end of the lesson we all knew it.

Ours was: Hooray Henry likes beer but can not order. Five neat Navy men all singing Peter's song called Arthur kicked cat.

(And that was 22 years ago!!)
