Guest
I found out smething interesting today. A new statue has been unveiled today in Liverpool portraying a chance meeting between Ken Dodd and Bessie Braddock, 2 Liverpool Icons! Bessie Braddock was a Liverpool MP and apparently she was responsible for the Lion Mark on British eggs. The statue shows Bessie... ...holding an egg in one hand. Apparently, so her former political agent Sidney Jacobs told me, she made a "very great speech" at Westminster over the importation of foreign eggs, suggesting British eggs be denoted from then on by a lion mark.So next time you see the lion stamp on the side of your boiled egg, you'll know that'd down to Bessie. http://culturechat.merseyblogs.co.uk/2009/06/doddy-and-bessie-in-bronze.html I would have loved to have met her but she died the same year I was born. I'm going to do some research on her, sounds like a fascinating woman and thought I'd share that interesting little snippet with you! I'll be off to see that statue as soon as I can
Scramble
That's so interesting! Do all British eggs have the lion mark? Because we buy free range from tesco and they're just plain... How weird is this: My dad was born in Liverpool and he could see the Welsh hills and Moel Famau from his bedroom window then he worked in wales still living in Liverpoool. Now he lives in Wales, on Liverpool Road can see the two cathedrals and the radio city tower from his and my mum's bedroom window and now works in Liverpool Thought I'd share that
Guest
I've climbed Moel Famau and there's a 'Moel Famau Way' in Liverpool, we drive it past it sometimes Maybe the eggs from Tesco aren't British, does it say they are on the box?

redhotchick
I can't remember the last time I saw a lion mark! Not that I've bought any eggs for a while! Out of curiosity I will have to check the eggs and the origin next time I'm shopping!
Guest
this is interesting http://www.gotoworkonanegg.co.uk/egg_facts_figures.html seems it was introduced in 1957 to identify British eggs, stopped being used at some point (?) and then reintroduced in 1998 to signify higher (food standard) quality British eggs. redhotchick
Frankly I'm shocked at the idea that we (as a nation) might import eggs
