sandyhas3chucks Posted June 13, 2009 Share Posted June 13, 2009 My disabled girls puts herself to bed very early in the piglu, which now has a nice easy ramp in( Piglu on the ground) Also rubber underlay now all under the Auboise. Daily place a very low enamel steel old roasting dish for a nest box in there(this very new trial) Also now trying gluccosamine, she is on daily metacam as vet thinks it is for the best, quality over quantity, Anyhow the early to bed bit. She learnt(even before she came to me) to bleat/cheap like a baby bird to get what she wants , and as it sounds so pathetic I have taken to offering her water (which she has lots) then when crying starts again, grit, (again which she eats) .All approx 8 pm before her other later but still early to bed pals go to bed too. She CAN get herself about a fair bit and thought it was too slippy in ther for her (hence rubber underlay all over now.) Am not offering food lest she gets dependant . think I am right? Unable to walk more than a few paces due to dislocated hocks, not being seen to.(now set) Remember for a year she did not/was not able to stand up and walk anyway, all she needed to do to live was shuffle forward to food & water.. She never made the ramp either in or out of the shed where she lived before, crying to come out/go in etc. She can now since pain relief get up and go quite a way, she can get herself about the run in spurts as long as she has space & no one standing over her. She is able to go into the Piglu, get herself into the nest box. but understandably takes a lot of effort on her part. the whole process of in , sort out ,lay, can take up to 3 hours.! She is starving after, I have noticed the others make for fod/water /grit after laying also. I agree there is a degree of human training there, just not sure how much is out of necessity, how much is training, after all the able bodied girls don't try it on, if they want something they just go get it. Just not sure.... by the way...hard hearted is ok, but then you don't take on a disabled girl. I knew she was limited, in fact expected less than she has proved able. She sounds delightful Tricia thanks but Redwing IS right to a degree. I don't want to do too much for her, and be over protective either. That said today, just when last night I was laying in bed thinking, that;s it, she has gone as far as she can, there won't be more improvement! blow me down if she hasn't pottered /tottered /hobbled about flipping loads today, what a chook! Don't know if coincidence but day 2 of glucosamine & a herbal tincture. Guest Posted June 14, 2009 Share Posted June 14, 2009 with Bea we just scatter some pellets and corn in front of her on the floor in the morning and make sure she has water nearby. She usually hops about a bit and over to the main food and water at some point during the day but we just make sure she has food and water nearby just in case. GKH Posted June 15, 2009 Share Posted June 15, 2009 Hi Sandy I have a disabled girl who takes hours to get in and out of eglu (with ramp covered in fleece blanket - replaced frequently) and she also sries when she wants something like going into to lay and can't quite make it. We have a little ramp and it is covered in roofing felt, so is nice and grippy. This is about mark 3 ramp! Inside the door there is pieice of carpet, underside (which is grippy) Auboise on top.
