dumb q time again !

 

i realise if yu clip wings shoudl eb ok - but can hens hop over fences ? how high do they need to be ?

Depends on the breed.

 

Some breeds (for example Leghorns) are very flighty so can easily fly up in trees etc. I did buy some Hybrids which flew on top of our caravan (even with clipped wings!)

 

The heavier fluffier breeds cannot fly so high (Brahmas, Cochin, Orpington)

 

I would say six foot or so for fence height.

When I looked this up before making our run, I was told at least 5 foot, however six if possible. This helps keep any determined predators out aswell as your chooks in!

just to say 6 foot will NOT keep any determined predator out! nor 8 or probably 10,

but for going over it also depends if there is a handy launch site. tops of Eglus & cubbes are perfect !

I have also partially covered the top if my run with chicken wire & netting which I thought would stop anything getting in over the top if they made it up there!
