Lesley
You could put brassica plants in for use over winter? - or leeks for winter use as well? http://www.delfland.co.uk have wonderful plant packages and also tell you what to plant/sow and when. Edit: the above link explains who they are but this one http://www.organicplants.co.uk/ is their online shop.
Christian
Curly kale, perpetual spinach and chard for winter would be good.
chickenanne
Mizuna, or any quick growing salad should be fine, and is great to ahve salad on the go. Beetroot - you should be able to find a variety for later sowing. Carrots - as above Courgettes - fairly late for putting seed in, but you'd get away with it. Alternatively, buy a couple plants from garden centre. 2 really will be enough!!!! Florence fenel & brassica, as already suggested Garlic and onions for overwintering - maybe a little early for them, but should be fine Or you could try potatoes for winter new potatoes: if you earth them up and use by Christmas then whould get away with it.
