We've got some wood which is about the right thickness (a photocopier was delivered to OH work, and there was some wood in the packaging).

 

My question is, should we varnish it or treat it in some way? Its going in our temporary accommodation in the WIR when the new girls arrive. Will be used during introductions only.

Depends on the quality really and whether it's been treated already. What's it like by the way?

I very much doubt its been treated as it was supporting a photocopier in transit

 

Its good quality though, about the same thickness as size as the plastic on the cube bars, hence why we though it would be perfect.

 

The alternative was going to be to get an extra set of cube bars and cut them to size, but I'm not sure that would work.

Sounds ok then. Perhaps give them a coat of plasti-cote as other people did with their wooden bars.

 

Or how about scrub the wood down as it is and see if it comes clean ok, then you might not need to treat them at all-just give them a good sand.

I would just knock off any loose bits/splinters etc.. and use as is, chuck away when they get manky, alternatively you could sand it and treat it for a longer life
