welshnik
Hi everyone Well, Christmas and Easter are on their third day with us now and I can't help thinking that they might be bored. Do chickens get bored and if so, what amuses them?
wooky
I can't help thinking that chooks get bored easily. They seem to be on such a faster level and respond really well to lots of stuff going on. Both me and my OH work from home and we've found that they get quite frustrated and grizzle if we ignore them but they are never happier than when we're outside or have friends round as they love showing off. Because they're natural foragers, anything that keeps them busy and involves searching for food is a winner. Melon skins, treat balls, trugs of soil they can dig about in and dust bath... they like routine but are also incredibly nosey so introducing new things is good too. teri
i found dog toys really good. the sort that you can hide treats in are fab. my girls love pushing it around and have learnt very quickly thay doing so produces food. i usually fill it with nuts and cereals. cheerios are a definate favorite! Also haning an apple on a string is quite good. you can also push seeds and nuts into the peal to add a treat.
Ain't Nobody Here
I put some perches in using branches pushed through the run, a large log and an old Ikea shoe rack. They love corn on the cob hung from the roof (although you end up with starch everywhere ), seed bells and apples.
Hen Watch
No matter how much "hentertainment" there is in the run, my lot always want to get out free ranging...... however I have got: - a log - a broomhandle (across the eglu run bars used as a perch) - they love this one - a dustbath - a metal food ball (see Omlet shop) which I stuff with lettuce - sometimes use string to tie carrot tops or brocolli stalks high up to peck at - "parrot mirror" which my lot completely ignore. Jewels
My two girls seem happy in the run we built around their cube and run from Omlet, I put in logs which harbour loads of ants, woodlice and other bugs, a bird feeder filled with nuts and dried meal worms. I also have put a cuttle fish bone tied up and they love pecking at that, I have an old washing tablet bag that I hang up and put greens in. Some days I sprinkle corn (tinned but rinsed in cold water) all around their area they spend ages scritching and scratching that up. I used to worry they got bored but when i look out the window to check on them they are nearly always happily scratching around for bugs or dust bathing.
