Pecking Hen!

Recommended Posts

Can anyone give me any advice?

Our hens are now 22 weeks old and laying every day. We're having fun getting to know them, with one exception. Edna, who seemed to be bottom of the pecking order, thinks everything is food and will peck fingers, toes etc.!

I give them a bowl of porridge every evening but struggle to get it in the run as Edna is always in there first, jumping up desperate to get her head in the bowl. If I try to push her away, she goes to peck me. The other night, the bowl ended upside down outside the run!?!

What can I do? Will she calm down as she gets older? The other hens love their food/treats too but aren't as desperate as Edna. She's already our least favourite hen, which is a shame as she's supposed to be the friendliest of the lot.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Hello :D I live just north of bristol so not far from you :D

Never had this problem myself but you could try shutting her out of the run for a few minutes then letting her in after the others :?

Whenever you go outside take a plant sprayer with water in and squirt her every time she pecks you? That could work

Good Luck

Tom

P.S. Don't know if you have heard of her but 'Annies' sell good squirt bottle things! She is based in Siston.

Hi,

Zena is our greedy hen and can eat anything 10 times quicker than the rest!!

So when she rushes out of the run I chuck her a treat then shut her out so the other 3 can eat in peace inside the run.

Zena goes frantic running round and round trying to get in but I figure that the exersise will do her good!!!
