A fly-trap that doesn't pong?

Recommended Posts

I bought a red-top fly trap last week and it has been absolutely fantastic at catching flies - it's nearly full already and has made the garden absolutely fine to be in... apart from now it's beginning to pong to high heaven (which is obviously why it's so effective). We have a small south-facing walled garden and now it's getting too pongy to sit outside, wherever we put it.

Any suggestions for an effective trap that isn't quite so stinky? I don't know if such a thing exists. I'm using all the usual citronella sprays and cleaning everyday too.

I have the same trap.....and agree it is a but whiffy :vom:

I think it may be attracting the files!!! We don`t have a massive garden and it seems that they are swarming around it. I have placed it at the chooky end of the garden on top of the composter......should I not have? Or maybe put it higher?

I have brought some Greenhouse sticky fly traps from B&Q to hang in the WIR and put a couple on the chook fence....no smell but a but unsightly!

Yes, it does look as though every fly in South Bristol is currently attracted to it - quite a spectacular and macabre sight!

I think the only answer is to change them every couple of weeks before they start getting too stinky but that's an expensive solution.

I've been using the long sticky fly trap things in my WIR, although they don't look nice there's usually a way of hiding them slight, behind a post or something!

I bought mine off ebay, they were really cheap and vanilla scented!

Ditto. I bought ten on Ebay but can see me buying more soon. They were brilliant when my chicks were in the garage, I've caught what seems like hundreds of flies.

Outside they're not so effective but I bought some citronella oil, put a few blobs in a squirty bottle of water and I've been squirting around where the flies are. This morning I squirted the wooden fences around where they are and I have seen a reduction. I think I'll spray twice a day and hopefully they'll get the message and go elsewhere!
