zahirb
Hi, Dainty appears to have Peritonitis. Recently she went to the Vet, who have her and her sister an injection and a course of antibiotics. Dainty seems very very quiet and doesnt have much energy. Yesterday we tilted her and she puked up lots of brown gunk, afterwhich she regained an appetite and drank lots and was on her feet again (where before she didnt stand). This morning however she is very quiet and not eating. Shes on antibiotics and is normally very very active, so i'm hoping shes strong and the antibiotics will kick in. I understand Peritonitis affects the crop, but if the food isnt staying down, what else can be tried? I have seen people suggest olive oil. Can it be any? Would extra vigin be ok? Do i put it in their mouths and rub the crop immediately? Someone also said give mash - is that layers mash, or mash potato? Perhaps i should liquidise her food. The vet said if she doesnt improve after a few days it may be bad news. Please can anyone offer suggestions. Thanks in advance
harveypup
Sorry i am no expert but would like to say two things. 1) When my chooks are poorly I give them anything that will tempt them to eat and is high in protein. Scrambled egg, mealworms, tuna, layers mash mixed with fruit yogurt. Keep trying diferent things. 2) One of the side effects of Baytril is lack of appetite so I always give it at night. I do hope she improves soon. They are a worry aren't they xx
zahirb
Hi Harvey, Thanks for the reply. I will give that a try. Shes currently in a box and cant stand. I didnt realise it causes loss of apetite. I'll try it at night. Hopefully she'll pull thru.
Olly
Oh, really sorry to hear it's peritonitis. I hope she perks up a bit - the antibiotics may make her feel a bit better.
zahirb
Olly, A big thanks to you. Went to PVG a few days ago. Thanks for the recommendation.
laurmurf
if it's her crop that affected than that would be impacted crop or sour crop. She would have a blockage in her crop of some sort. If it's perotinitis then it's her abdomen that will be affected. She'll have fluid internally that causes her tummy to swell and makes it difficult to walk or breath when sitting. zahirb
Thanks for the replies. Harveypup: I tried giving her favourites (those that are high in protein) she enjoyed that.
harveypup
Glad to hear it - I just think the more you can get them to eat the more strength they will have to get better. How is she today?
zahirb
Hi Harvey, It was looking positive yesterday but sadly this evening she passed away. Its incredibly saddening, she like her sister are more than egg layers, they are docile pets. I'm sure many can relate to this. Thanks for your assistance on this matter. In fact thanks for all who replied.
