Closed eye

Recommended Posts

Lottie finishes the Baytril probably around Friday or Saturday this week. The vet said it was about a week's supply. She seemed to think this would do the trick as there was no trauma around the eye and just looked like an infection, although did mention if it came to it they could remove the eye(!). She's certainly very perky again now so is obviously feeling a lot better. Think we'll carry on til the end of the Baytril and then ring for advice if eye still looks cloudy. I'm wondering if the perhaps the infection is clearing up :) but may be she has lost her sight(?) :(

No, we still have enough baytril for a couple more days. Did I mention we are also giving her metacam? I just think we have been really unlucky but part of me thinks do we continue with all the treatment or send the hens back for replacements, which is what Omlet have offered todo! It makes me feel really bad because we have all grown so attached to them both and can't even consider what would happen if we sent them back. Just keep hoping for the best! I don't think she will regain her sight but hope she can live happily with one eye, just don't need recurring problems further down the line.

Well there's one more dose of Baytril left in the bottle for Lottie and then I think it will be back to the vets on Monday. She's fine in herself now but the eye is still sometimes closed, very swollen compared to the other one, and the eyeball is still clouded white over, so not sure what's going on. I can't see it clearing up somehow. :?

Oh dear it really is a bad situation. We took Pepper to the vet on Saturday as her eye looked pussy. We were told that she has a ruptured eyeball, not good news. This means she will not get better and the infection would spread to her brain, sadly there is only one option and that is to have her put to sleep. I do hope you have better news with Lottie. I can honestly we did try everything and gave it our best shot, but she must have just scratched and scratched it when I wasn't around and this would have aggravated it and made it worse. Not looking forward to Monday. Good Luck xx

Has the vet tried with anymore Baytril? :?

Our Willow's eye went pussy & ulcerated before she lost her sight. We were not advised that anything would spread to her brain :anxious: and other than only having sight in one eye she is a perfectly normal happy little hen.

I really hope there is another outcome for you.

Lottie seems like she has exactly the same problem as our Willow.

From your description it sounds like the infection is still there, but don't give up hope! :) Maybe another week of antibiotics will finally finish it off. There is a chance though that she may have lost her sight already as Willow's blind eye is still a cloudy greyish white and it does "bulge" out a bit compared to the other healthy eye. Our good vet has assured us though she will live quite happily with the eye still in as he warned the operation is tricky.

I hope things improve for Lottie soon.

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear about Pepper. :( It's really sad when you've done all you can and that's the only outcome. From reading about little Willow, it does sound as if Lottie has exactly the same problem so we'll keep our fingers crossed that the worst is her losing her sight, which like you say I think may have already happened. :( She's still on the first dose of Baytril, it will finish tomorrow and her eye is white inside and bulging. She's fine in herself though. I'll take her up the vets tomorrow and see what they say. Not looking forward to it :anxious:

Well Lottie has just returned from another visit to the vets. She has an ulcer behind her eye so they have given her another weeks supply of Baytril and she has to have the drops in twice a day as well. Vet says can't promise anything, but she is a lot better than last time she saw her. If this fails she will have to have her eye removed. So not all bad news I suppose :) At least there's a chance of saving her eye and more importantly, saving Lottie :)

I'm amazed :o After starting the second lot of Baytril and going back on the eye drops as well, Lottie's eye seems to be getting better all of a sudden. The white which was covering the eye has almost gone and we can now see her eye again, although it's nowhere as near as clear as the other one. Not sure if she has any sight in it or if it wil ever be totally right, but it's certainly going in the right direction. Just hope the infection will go altogether. Can anyone advise if when we've finished the Baytril this time, should we take her back for a check up again?

I would if I were you. Some things need prolonged treatment and having got this far you don't want to take any chances. She may be left with some scarring on the surface of the eye which may make her vision a bit blurry but it sounds like things are definately going the right way. Well done you for sticking with it

Good news on Lottie. Just come back from the vets after finishing the second lot of Baytril and although the eye is still a little cloudy, apparently she will still have some sight in it and the infection/ulcer has gone! :D Just got to continue with the eye drops for one final week and then she's fine. So glad and a big thank you to everyone for all the advice :D
