cluckbok
Ooh they make noise early in the morning and they upset our girls this morning! Our neighbour told us they hear the magpies in the morning and they think that it's them that upset our girls this morning. They were bok bokking in their run and wouldn't put a sock in it!! They only did it for less than 5 mins but trouble is it was 7am and then they were at it again at 7.30am! They were at the run door looking! Matilda was the main culprit. My neighbour said it's because magpies steal baby chicks and raid nests for the eggs. My girls didn't lay today either Perhaps I need to hang my jewellery tree off the garage roof!! smanners
It's the heron that upsets my girls They all duck down in unison and then squawk and growl for about 5 minutes afterwards
sjp
mine don't mind the herons but they stop and watch the planes go over Especially the Emirates one. Its one of the bigger ones we get also so the lowest live under the flight path to Birmingham
beach chick
mine take absolutely no notice of other birds (grrrrr! why not think about chasing starlings and sparrows away from the layers pellets? and I'm sure they could take on a crow if they got together...) they also ignore dogs, cats and the lawn tractor - in fact, I even mow inside the run on the tractor, and they just follow behind waiting to see what they can find in the short grass!!! crumbs
I have the same problem with the magpies. Every morning at about 5.30 - 6.00 they start up, and set the girls off. I think we have so many because next door leave out vast sacks of butchers off cuts for the foxes, which the magpies also eat, so their population has exploded. I get up when the girls start, sort their food out and let them into their run, then go back to bed. I'd like to shoot the magpies but am too woossey. cluckbok
The girls were OK this morning, there wasn't a magpie in sight! I hope they stay out of the way!
Guest
The crows around here do pinch the ducklings even when they are quite big(half grown) or they will attack and kill them then eat them up! Since gamekeepers are not allowed to keep the numbers under control of ie magpies etc there are def more around. I read somewhere the bird population ie song thrushes etc have really declined by an alarming rate due to the mapies etc indie
