Hens@HalfMoonLane
One of my ex bats - out in May 09 was: well on Monday Didn't lay on Tuesday and spent all day on the nesting box, I left her thinking a softie was on it way. By Tuesday evening started to develop a soft sour crop which I emptied before bed. Also massaged and gave ZolcalD supplement and Baytril. Wed morning walked out of the Eglu but was hunched, miserable and drinking. When I picked her up had a sour soft crop which I emptied again and repeated meds as night before. Had brought up water from crop through night which was sitting in the tray Spoke to specialist polutry vet I use Wed mid morning who said to carry on meds for 4 days but thought if there was no improvement in 48 hoiurs the prognosis wasn't good. Also suggested geting some Daktarin gel which I did. Got a call from hubby saying she had perked up and was behaving like a chicken again but still no egg. Her posture doesn't suggest that she has an egg stuck but her behaviour on Tuesday suggests she has been trying to lay. Thursday - this morning, crop not emptied fully but water passing through now and definately no sour smell. Normal behaviour,,,,,,,but think it is now getting impacted, I am doing the parrafin and massage. Really hoping that in the morning the majority of food has at least passed through. What do you think the problem is? Egg bound? Any ideas? Any thoughts appreciated/similar experience. Thanks
house-elf
hi, i don't know if i can really help, but my betty spent a couple of days on and of the nest, was very quiet, but other than that was still eating and drinking, although not much and I put it down to the heat (a couple of weeks ago when it was very hot). Then after a few days, i decided to get her checked over by the vet, but when I went to get her back out of the coop, she had died. I had only just handled her a couple of minutes before and didn't get the impression she was on death's door. Anyway, i had her pm'd and the vet said she had egg peritionitis - which i think is when the egg misses the funnel to the outside world and just sits in the abdo and rots. I didn't notice anything different about her gait nor did she seem in pain when i felt her tummy. My advice would bejust to take her to the vets and get her checked over. My breeder said that the fact that she was on the nest shows that she was trying to lay. I am only a newbie at this, so someone else maybe able to advise better, but after losing my betty, I'd say get her checked. Hoep she perks up soon x
Hens@HalfMoonLane
I think it is likely she has an egg stuck which would tie in with her spending Tuesday on the nesting box. I think I can feel a lump like an egg just below her rib cage so maybe it is making it's way down slowly. She is chirpy, her crop felt more normal tonight and this morning had 80% emptied. Hope she passes it soon and has no others in the system, I lost a hen at Easter to very similar sysmpton and she ended up having about 3 eggs stuck, only the bottom one could be felt. Egluntyne
A bit about egg binding **here**
Hens@HalfMoonLane
I'm pretty sure she has an egg stuck but it is still quite high up, possibly is moving down. I've given her another dose of Zolcal D and continuing the antibiotics. My poultry vet said they can take up to 6 weeks to come out - has anyone experienced one taking this long? Lizzie
Hi there Such similar symptoms to Flo who has just been diagnosed (see my post with similar title). I thought Flo could have been egg bound but my vet said that she would not have survived for so long if she was. I have found the liquid paraffin to be quite effective in making them pass things (even out of their crops) but it does make them feel unwell. An additional thing to use IF eggbound is hormone injections but no point doing these until you are sure. What is her poo like ? Is she eating ? or does she seem interested in eating but then walks away ? Best wishes Liz
Hens@HalfMoonLane
Good news - she has passed an intact softie tonight after I put some KY jelly in her vent - she started to push and it popped out after some effort. The good news was it wasn't rotten like the last experience I had when my hen died. I'm hoping that there aren't any more up there. I think she has probably stopped laying anyway as she's getting new feathers and her friend from the same BHWT release is also getting new feathers and has more or less stopped laying. It's made the experience of buying the KY jelly in Morrisons this morning all worth it. After hiding it in my basket I rushed with great relief to the self serve till and rung it through really quick not realising that it would be in size 48 arial font on the display for everyone to see whilst I panicked to get all my other items through. Then.... I had a problem and the young man had to come and help - well he gave me a really funny look and then I had to show my receipt at customer service cos I'd forgotton to get my car parking. So clearly all of Pontefract worked out I had other things on my mind other than groceries. At the time I thought if I said it was for my chicken that would be even worse. In retrospect I'd have been much better off going to Mrs Discrete at till 21- or the college student at till 24 who wouldn't have batted an eyelid. I've been following the Flo posts - hope she has a good outcome.
