Valkyrie
It's a good diary Debsie. At the moment we have Apache standing guard over food outside the back door. She doesn't want to eat - just stop the others bar Sioux, who is allowed. Yesterday Squirt was eating with the 2 bigguns, and I was waiting for Apache to pounce, but she didn't. Squirt was a bit wary though. Strangely enough Jiu Jiu who is the biggest now seems to be the one pecked at most. They are all in the cube at night although we have an L-shaped partition to keep them apart. They can see each other quite well, but the big girls can't peck when the others are sitting down. They are probably still too small to take away the partition just yet. The only downside was that the nesting box has been made off limits to them all and an egg was laid on the bars - should have heard the whingeing for that! Still, Apache will have to be inconvenienced while she is being a meannie. As for the egg, wasn't missed because they are having to be discarded after vetty mite treatment for a week or so (I'll wait till next week to be on the safe side). I wanted them all in the cube for safety reasons, and because the heat (remember that?) was a bit too much in the wooden broody box - plus they had outgrown it. I am so going to have to do a a garden centre trip for a master blaster. They see me with the hose and scarper, so I can't splosh Apache when she needs to be sploshed. Might look at plants too. Space Chick
Just thought I would add an update prior to the ex batt arrival on Saturday. There is harmony in the run, they are hanging out as one flock now in and out, and the pecking order seems to be mostly established, however, there is some jostling for position towards the bottom of the flock It'll be interesting to see how the ex batts arrival will affect the group dynamics. Valkyrie
Similar here too. We get the odd squawk from Squirt, but usually it's when she thinks she's going to get a nip. Tipsy seems to be accepted into the big girls club - we think it's because of her having dark feathers. All 4 girls were eating out of the same bowl no problem and Jiuj was busy chasing flies. Stupid er, boy. All go into the cube together. We are having to block off the nesting box because the two little girls like going in there with Jiuj having it's head in the nest box and it's bum on the roosting bars. So in goes a big box and we have to take it out in the mornings - sadly we have missed a couple of eggs down through the bars. Never mind. It'll be better soon.
