Bantam Araucanas & Polands

Recommended Posts

Hi Tom - here are some photos of my two bantam Polands (although Picasso is a rather large bantam )

They are both very chatty and friendly, and will follow you around the garden to see what you are up to; definitely my favourite breed. Picasso tends to lay quite well, but is easily put off by stress (new chickens; new run; etc.). Lovely little white eggs, with a very smooth porcelain-like texture. Pablo is only about 14 weeks, so not laying yet.

Polands are great, friendly, good layers of decent size eggs considering their size, very tasty and rich. They need lipped drinkers to prevent them dunking pompoms all the time, best not to feed mash as this can get in pompoms. Inspect heads regularly for lice/mites. Having said all that ours are no more bother than other types of chook, tho its best not to run them in a mixed flock if you have peckers - they can't see to get out of the way (tho you can trim the wig to help them). Also they have thinner skulls than some other breeds so you need shelter, and if pompom gets wet it can flop down exposing a sort of 'monks head' of pink which can be very attractive to others to peck. Having said that we keep ours with a bant orp (the polands boss the orp) - a docile breed. We bought 2 more polands yesterday and have already had an egg. Its quite normal for them to be a bit skittish at first in new surroundings (they can/do fly but ours have always settled down quite quickly tho every now and again someone flys over the netting - you have to take care if you have hunting cats) but I find they are especially responsive to the voice. They are a great little bird, chatty and entertaining. Ours have always had quite a strong sense of the group dynamic - there's lots of interaction.
