Samuel Morse
My two Lights Sussex girls have been laying for a month. I'm getting a few double-yokers which is nice. But yesterday I got two eggs (which I understand is standard) and then by the end of the day there were four softies dotted around the garden -- is that normal in relatively young layers? Egluntyne
They often have blips such as this in the early days of laying. It is best to cut right back on treats so that they eat more pellets.
sjp
put a slug of cod liver oil in there feed a couple of time a week the vit D will help with calcium adsorption have they got access to a pot of mixed grit
Samuel Morse
Should I limit freeranging time? They are always hounding us for food when they are out, and when there are pellets in their run, though they rarely get treats now.
Egluntyne
It might be a good idea to limit free ranging till the afternoon so that they tank up on pellets, and then put them back in the run before twilight so that they tank up again before bed. chickencam
We let our girls out in the afternoon when most laying has been done and put them away after about 2-3 hours. That was they get a change of scene but still eat plenty of pellets. When we had our White Star she laid quite a few softies and large double yolkers until she got her laying tackle sorted out, then she popped a lovely white egg out nearly every day for 18 months.
