What do you have to do to keep their claws and beaks sharp an in good condition?

Let them free range and scratch about and then you don't have to do anything.

Thanks... I should've made clear that mine are on rubber chippings... I think they will be okay though the summer when I can give them plenty of free ranging... but am thinking ahead to the winter?!

Mine are on rubber chippings but they still dig around in the run and when I get home they free range for about an hour, they seem fine. In fact the dig soooo deep in the WIR that I have to rake it into order every evening..very OCD

It might be an idea to give them a couple of paving slabs to walk over to keep their claws and beaks short on. I've never had a problem with them getting too long as the hens run up the concrete path.

Thanks... I've had them free ranging for the first time today in a nice gravelly area! They seemed to enjoy it scratching about... plus they were eager to get back in their run when I placed a few meal worms in there... I don't know why I was so apprehensive about letting them free range for the first time!

I was exactly the same at the beginning last August, not wanting to let the chooks out as I was too scared that something would happen to them now they are out everyday all day except for extreme weather.

 

where abouts in Cheshire are you?

They have been out 4 times now today... for about 30mins each time! I'll be able to let them out for longer tommoz!
