Is my chicken poorly?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone offer any advice? We have had our 2 girls since early April, no real problems apart from the odd shell-less egg or double yoker. For the past few days I've noticed one of them lying down more often, with her right eye shut. She is not off her food, and was laying as usual until today when she seems to be lying down more often. She seems to have her eye shut a lot of the time, even when preening - I can't see any thing odd about it and no discharge, can anyone think of what may be wrong with her?

Welcome to the forum Dilys. :D

Has she got a foreign body in it do you think?

Why not grab hold of her and gently prize it open and see if there is anything obvios.

I always bathe dodgy eyes with cold tea (no milk, no sugar!) it is very soothing and mildly antiseptic.

Maybe the sitting down thing is to do with the eye though because she feels unbalanced.

It's like when a chicken has and ear infection they don't walk at their best... or if you get some water in their ear during a bath and they look drunk...

They again it could be something different :?

Good Luck.

One of mine has an eye infection which started with her constantly having her eye closed. When we managed to open her eye up and have a look, the eyeball was cloudy and she is now on her second lot of antiobiotics, Baytril, and eye drops and we are waiting to see the outcome in a week's time. I don't mean to alarm you, but if it looks cloudy inside at all, then I would get her straight up the vets as it can get more serious. This is the best advice people on this site gave us and was really glad we took her. Good luck x

Yeah-I guess her eye could be causing her to feel out of sorts :(

Poor thing.

Just hope that it's nothing serious :)

Thanks to everyone for your advice - we finally managed to catch her yesterday evening, the eye looks fine, not cloudy or swollen, but she kept it shut the whole of the time we were trying to look at it! Managed to bathe it with cold tea as suggested, so just have to see how she goes on for now. She laid her egg as usual this morning, so watch this space......
