TheHunter
Hi I am slowly putting together the bits and pieces I need before getting my chooks and I wanted to know what feeder you would recommend. The feeders seem to come in all different shapes and sizes and would like your advice. 1 If I only have 3 chooks what is the best size, I wouldn't need 5Kg would I? 2 Plastic of galvinised. 3 With or without the rain cover thing? 4 Hanging or on the ground? The feeder would have to be suitable for layer pellets. Thanks (:>
chickenanne
I have a feeder that's hangs, which is great - anything so it's above floor level is better so's it doesn't end up with crud from the run getting kicked into it. I have plastic - galvanised costs more but lasts longer. I also have two - so I can wash one out and fill the other up. Get one that you fill from the top but they eat from the bottom so they get the oldest stuff first - not critical but nbetter that way i always reckon. I'd go for smaller sized ones as you want to top it up regularly to avoid it going stale etc.
The Dogmother
I have 11 chooks at the moment and find the Omlet feeders inadequate, unless you use the Glug for feed. I use a suspended gravity feeder with a rain hat (the run is covered, but some wet inevitably percolates through), and a suspended gravity drinker, both plastic. The two real advantages are that they can't get in them to kick the food out/poo in it. The extra height means that they can't kick bedding or soil in them. sjp
if you have 3 you'll only going to feed them about 350 grams a day so you want need a very big feeder as for a rain hat it will depend on were you site the feeder if its well cover no rain hat but if not then a rain hat i use a 1.5kg plastic tude feeder in both runs the one in the new girls run i had to put a cover on the run to keep the rain out as i they don't do a rain hat for the small feeders i'm have to throw more feed away than thery're eating
