3 eggs in one day - not looking happy

Recommended Posts

Hi,

After any advice from you fabulous lot again...

Ginger laid a normal egg this morning. I KNOW this because there were two laid this morning, and one was definitely Gingers, and we only have 2 chooks.

Later on this afternoon, she went into "haunch" mode, a sure sign there was a softee on the way. She does this once a month or so - 2 eggs on same day, 2nd one a softee. We left her for a bit, as she can often pass these no problem, but was going on a while and she wasn't "right" so put her in a hot bath, and dried her (gently) with a hairdryer.

Within 15mins, a softee popped out. Hoorah we thought, but she was still very down. Tempted with a couple of bits of sweetcorn, but nothing else. Then about an hour later, a 2nd softee arrived. This was 10 mins ago, and she still looks very down, and not moving.

All were reasonable sized eggs as well.

Any idea what may cause this? She is not looking happy, and been seperated from her friend, as Fred keeps pecking Gingers bottom..

Should I switch to weetabix for her tomorrow, rather than layers pellets? Any other suggestions? They were wormed with Flubenvet 3/4 weeks ago.

Good news - is now back to normal, terrorizing the back garden, eating anything and everything in sight!

Yep, she has constant access to grit/shell. Also have lots of spinach which is high in calcium, although may start them with limestone flour now.

Don't like giving supplements for the sake of it, but don't want her to suffer if adding something to her diet will help.

Do you think it will help here, bearing in mind she is laying 3 eggs in one day - which can't be normal...?

i had the same thing with big red when she stated laying the advise i was given elsewere was to give vit D cod liver oil is the simplest way a slug in the feed a couple of times a week

also dried meal worms are good as they contain a ammino acid that helps the body adzorb calcium again a couple of time a week but not to many as they are fattening

big red use to pick up within ten to fifteen minutes of laying the second softy the wonder off as if nothing had happend scared me silly the first time i saw it

Agree about the scared silly! There is a post on here somewhere with me going hysterical the first time I saw it!

Ginger is back to normal now. The 3rd egg definitely took more out her then just 2. She went to bed earlier then usual (after a good feed and scratch around), but was fine this morning.

Thanks for your suggestions. They already get dried meal worms (probably too many, but OH is worse then a kid feeding them treats :wall: ). Will look at the Vit D etc options.
