I just read an article on free-ranging chickens which suggested feeding inside the coop to contain spillage, make cleaning up easier and minimise the attraction of rats. That's what we used to do "when I was a girl" Does anyone do this?

Not sure would work in the Eglu... Nowhere to put anything that would be secure!

 

I know my two would have any food all over the place in a matter of minutes - and then moan they hadn't any food left

I guess it depends on the size of the coop, if you have a shed big enough for the hens to shelter inside on a wet day then I guess there would be enough room inside to put a feeder but in a small coop it could get impractical especially if you have hens inside eating when someone else is trying to lay etc.. a small confined space could lead to bickering

i have a three tier coop and leave the food and water in the top section. i also put food and water outside in their WIR. they seam to use both quite happily. it also means that they don't start making a lot of noise in the mornings as they can always get a snack!

A three-tier coup Oh my - that does sound posh! Mine hs not arrived yet but it be a single level des res Not sure whether there will be room inside for a feeder - will have to decide when it arrives. Don't want to cause any bickering in the happy home!
