Gene seems to have a bt of a weepy/watery right eye, the left one is fine, im guessing she copped one in the eye when she got the occasional pecking from the cockerel, we have tried wiping it with boiled salted water a couple of times but its still there, doesnt look too bad but doesnt seem to want to clear up on its own, any suggestions would be welcome.

If the home remedies/bathing are not helping I would recommend a trip to the vets. It may be the start of an infection and require antibiotics (usually Baytril), you can't be too careful with eyes IMO.

my late speckaldy had the same problem vet gave fucithalmic eye drops cleared it up no problem I just had to sign a letter because its not liecenced for poultry

Bathing it with cold tea might help. It is very soothing and mildly antiseptic.

 

You can use bog standard infected eye drops from the chemist but remember that it is *not licensed for use in poultry in UK.

I would not risk leaving it if she has been sore for more that 24 hours. If there is damage to the surface of an eye they can quickly become infected leading to ulcers and some pretty unpleasant things result. I would suggest a trip to the vet.

thanks guys, on closer inspection if you looked at her straight on you could see it was swolen underneath as well,

took her to the vets and she's given us some Baytrill, .4ml twice a day for 5 days, fingers crossed,

just dripped it on some bread and gulp! straight down.

 

 

the hard bit was the £20 it cost hasnt given us an egg yet either

It's good that you've got the Baytril. One of our chickens, Lottie, had an ulcerated eye, and she had the eye drops which didn't do a thing. The next vet gave her Baytril and after having two lots, her eye is finally better. Good luck, hope she's better soon

ive just been reading the thread on Lottie's eye, glad to hear shes getting better, i noticed that you mentioned not eating her eggs for 6 weeks, is that due to the baytrill ? the vet never mentioned anything to us, Gene isn't actually laying yet but we are hoping anytime soon, would be gutted if she finally starts laying and then we couldnt eat them

Yes, when we visited the vet today she again reminded us not to eat the eggs for another 4 weeks now that we've finished the Baytril. When we were first given it we had to sign a disclaimer form to say that we wouldn't put the eggs into the food chain as apparently if you eat them it can cause seizures in some people. I'm very surprised this wasn't mentioned to you Maybe ring the vet for some advice. Lottie lays lovely big eggs and it is a bit disheartening not being able to eat them!

The baytril had no effect at all on Gene's eye and to be honest i wasnt going to spend more money at the vets, that might seem a bit heartless but she cost us £20 & just over £20 for the vet, not to mention food etc. and we've hade her now 3 months and she still hasnt paid us anything back not a single egg...

 

anyway, the swelling did seem to get bigger and eye a little bit weepier but didnt seem to bother her, feeding and foraging etc as normal, so we decided to just leave it,

 

anyway the good news is 2 months on it has finally cleared up on its own this last week, swelling all gone and no weepy eye,

 

ps, still no eggs
