Sal119
Need some general advice from experienced chicken keepers please! We had our two chooks from Omlet in May and was wondering when we need to think about worming them? Also, could do with some advice as to the best stuff to use (I've read about a few different ones on here), and the best place to get it from. The pet shops locally don't seem to stock a lot of poultry items. Also, with regard to lice and mites, should they be treated only when they have them or is it best to dust them down with something occasionally to prevent it? Again, what's the best stuff to use? All comments gratefully received. Thank you

Chucky Mama
Definately Flubenvet for worming.
Hen Watch
Personally I use Flubenvet Intermediate Wormer – buy online without prescription – tub lasts 2/3 years – I routinely worm them every 3/4 months regardless. No egg withdrawal. Buy online but search for best price as someone always has it on offer. You can use an organic natural product called Verm-X but it has had mixed feedback on this forum. Buy Flubenvet from : http://www.petdispensary.co.uk http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk http://www.petmeds.co.uk/ (Note: If you have a TopCashBack account for your online purchases – Petmeds and Chemist Direct are both listed as merchants cashback – but do note that Pet Dispensary is cheapest anyway even without the cashback. ) As for louse treatment. Regular handling and parting of the feathers is a good thing. But I put Louse Powder in with the dry earth in my chooks dustbath which helps matters. This is the stuff I use: http://www.countrywidefarmers.co.uk/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=1285
-sarahjayne
I worm our girls with Flubenvet - it's a definite must, I haven't tried Verm X but when trying to purchase it in the shop, the shopkeeper actually told me its only to prevent it but in actual fact, it's not very good at that either. As for louse powder etc I clean the wooden house out every 4-5 days or so, and on the poo tray put a dusting of Red mite powder and then newspaper on top, for the nextboxes I have 4 very fussy ladies who insist on sleeping in them, so i take them apart, clean them with hot soapy water with Ecover washing up liquid in it, and wait for them to dry. Once dry a very generous dusting of Diatom (DE, Diatomaceous Earth) in all the corners, sides, and floor of the nestboxes. Then add the shredded paper and/or straw. I then add a bit of DE to their Aubiose dustbath. (I am paranoid, but before this we had a small breakout of lice.. not something I want happening again!!) I tried powdering the girls down with DE aswell but again, they were not impressed
Egluntyne
I agree re the Flubenvet. VermX in my experience does not prevent worm infestations.
