Anyone live near Keynsham ?

Recommended Posts

Just wondered if any of you kind chickeney people know what Keynsham is like ?

I posted recently about thinking of moving closer to an area with jobs and away from rural Somerset and have discovered Keynsham as a reasonable location as far as access to Bristol and Bath are concerned (without actually living in a city) and wondered if anyone knows what it's like.

Thinking about making a "fact-finding" trip next weekend.

Many Thanks

We used to live there and FIL still lives there now

Keynsham is pretty nice, the 'Wells Road' end of it is nicer than the rest with some pretty fields to look out on and walk in, quiet roads and some nice housing. The area around the hospital/Rock Road/Charton Road is quite nice, large spacious terraces with reasonable gardens but more hemmed in

There are a couple of estates that are a bit depressing with lots of people with time on their hands but with mainly petty crime and no real trouble....

There are Somerfield and Iceland stores on the high street and a nce big Co-op a short drive away

The bus service to Bristol is excellent but the road from Keynsham to Bristol is a main one so lots of congestion in the morning, the journey takes about an hour. Buses to Bath are pretty good in the day, less so in the evenings. There is a train station with links straight to Bristol and Bath which is very handy and the fares are pretty good

There are some nice cul-de-sacs as you go up Charlton Road towards the countryside

The population of Keynsham is pretty elderly and its a friendly place with reasonable shops

the outlying villages of Queens Charlton and Chewton Keynsham are lovely

Saltford is a slightly better bet in terms of a mixed age population and environment but house prices are higher

Bitton is a lovely place and is worth considering, less shops but more village like and very quiet

Another area close to Bristol and Bath thats worth exploring is the area that extends along the A420 between Bristol and Chippenham, The Shoe, Lansdown, Marshfield and Wick are all nice areas

Further afield the areas along the A4 between Bath and Chippenham are also nice, Colerne, Corsham, Bathford and Batheaston are nice and the villages of Box, Kingsdown and Ashley are wonderful (not biased as I grew up there or anything.... ) this area is further from Bristol though

An area that is theoretically good is the Cribbs Causeway area where the M5/M4 cross but in reality this is a bad area for traffic congestion which is a shame, the house prices here are pushed up by the MOD HQ too

Sorry if I have confused you!

I was brought up in Keynsham and all my family still live there!! I work in Willsbridge which is just past the Cadburys factory and also a really quaint place, nothing there but your'e very close to Longwell Green which has a retail park of shops and Asda its also close to Kingswood which has a big highstreet a bit like Keynsham.

We are currently trying to move back to Keynsham, Its just a really nice quiet place to live! a highstreet which is always busy and has everything you need and a good range of pubs! bus routes are really good to bath and bristol and you also have the train station (platform!)

It is a nice place to live! quite 'country' like but you arent cut off from anything at all! My mum and dad live on Charlton Road towards the top end near the fields and they love it! It seems to be split into 2 areas as well, Wellsway side which is one side of the highstreet and is generally a lot more expensive then the other side is where some of the council estates there. however being brought up on one of these compared to where im living at the moment it is really nice!!!

There are 2 schools Welllsway and Broadlands, both are very good but having been a Broadlands student myself i would probably say Wellsway seems to be the better one!! Lots of primary schools as well most in a walkable distance from where ever you live...

Let us know what you decide! things seem to be selling more quickly around there now, ive noticed a lot of Sold signs going up especially around the Charlton Road area!

Thank-you so much, Redwing and Gem_Seb,

Sounds promising !

We moved away from the Thames Valley 4 years ago to a very small village on the Somerset Levels, and whilst it's in lovely countryside, I've found getting a decent job within a reasonable distance very dificult - I'm an accountant, by the way (Don't get me started on how owners of businesses in Somerset treat their staff - they get away with pretty much anything as there are so few jobs available)

I've pretty much accepted that I need access to Bristol and would love to have a train station nearby as well as a few shops etc locally. We don't have kids, but do have a dog and (of course) chickens

I'll keep you posted, if we do end up there, maybe we could all meet up for some chicken-chatter one day. Good luck with your move, Gem_Seb

Good luck with your move as well!! We are yet to get onto the market but we are hoping to soon! certinely this year anyway!! There are lots of little places around Bristol but i would say Keynsham and Kingswood probably have the most in terms of local things as they both have large High Streets, Kingswood is better if you prefer period style houses and Keynsham is a bit quieter and has a good mix of housing.

You have a bigger range of job choices in Keynsham as its really accessible to Bristol and Bath! ive worked in both locations and have never had too much trouble with getting to and from them. Bath is probably quicker to get to and from if you use the park and ride service as the roads just don't get the congestion like Bristol but even the journey to Bristol only takes around 45 minutes in peak rush hour..

Chicken chatter sounds good to me!! Good luck! :D
