where to start! growing veg

Recommended Posts

hi

ive always facied growing my own veg but have no idea where to start!

ive got an area thats free but it only gets a few hours of full sun a day- later in the day.

would i be able to grow some things in this area? im going to build a risen bed in full sun but it seems a shame not to use it?

what could i grow at this time of year? being a beginner am i best to buy plants ready to plant in rather than growing from seed?

any help at all greatly appreciated! i suppose we have all got to start somewhere- but i feel a bit daunted by it all!

thanks all

At this time of year you could put in winter and spring cabbage plants, quick growing things like turnips radishes and lettuces, herbs like parsley, coriander etc. Lack of light might be an issue with things planted from seed but nothing ventured nothing gained.

Look in the garden cntres for reduced plants at this time of year but avoid any that are yellowing or leggy.

Ready grown plants are always a help when you're first starting out. I'd go for winter cabbage and leeks. Swiss chard is easy to grow from seed and doesn't need full sun to thrive - plus it survives the winter to give you early spring greens. Salad stuff (e.g. radish, leaf-lettuce). You might get away with some dwarf French beans if you plant them now (it's worth a try!) Good luck!
