NixiePixie
Sara (ex bat- had her since May) has been laying eggs beautifully and reliably every day- as do my other 3. Bless them. They are on layers pellets and have oyster shell grit; and grain in the afternoon. Two weeks ago, Sara started laying shell-less eggs, reliably everyday. I haven't seen any blood or any nasties- just a mucus mess in the nesting box after she goes up to lay Yesterday, she appeared to drop another 'egg' on the floor and there was a huge hen rush to eat it. Nice. Is there anything that I should be doing? All I can seem to find relates to hens doing this 'occasionally' rather than regularly. Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks, NixiePixie
legend21
Have you added cod liver oil or limestone flour to the feed to give her extra calcium, Im not an expert but that is where I would start. good luck Jackie

Mrs Slats
we had this problem with Paxo. the few hard shells she did lay she started pecking at and she had developed a taste for. she was also eating less pellets because she was full on her own eggs...which wasn't helping her with laying hard shelled eggs. it's a viscious circle. We started by popping in a couple of clay eggs in the nest box to discourage the own egg eating. And gave them a daily dose of layers porridge with extra limestone flower and cod liver oil to kick start the hard shell production. the porridge was dosed with tuna / corn etc to make it more tempting than plain old pellets. It's turned things around pretty well. I haven't seen a softie since and we've been getting a brown or 2 a day from our 4 girls. (They had gone a month without laying an egg between them.) i still give them the super porridge every now and again, just to keep them on track - I'm not running a hotel
Chooks Aloud
They sometimes have a blip and do lay softees but if you are constantly getting soft eggs, you need to take her out of lay and let her have a rest. To do this stop feeding her pellets and just feed corn. This will bring on a moult and egg laying will stop. Once the moult has started, put her back on the pellets. She maybe in a moult for couple of months, but this will let her laying tackle have a good rest. Hope this helps.
NixiePixie
Many thanks everyone- she's such a dear little thing, definately the most sociable of the lot. I will take her away from the rest during the day and feed her just grain for a while and see how it goes. Fingers crossed!
