honeysuckle hens
Our beautiful blue egg layer is 6months old and very healthy and lays every day (and has laid today) Tonight i went to take her from her outdoor perch in the run enclosure to the indoor chicken house. She had a really wet and dirty bottom and on closer inspection has some pink/red egg shaped and sized thick lump hanging out of her bottom. I have tried ringing the out of hours vets and RSPCA but they can't do anything or have any idea what it could be. Does anyone know what this could be? Is it an egg issue or part of her bowel coming out??? Thanks Worried hen owner........
Egluntyne
It sounds as if she might have a prolapsed oviduct. I would clean her up by bathing the area with warm water and dry it. Then bring her indoors and keep her in a darkened box overnight. Hopefully it should right itself , but if not you could try to push it back in with a gloved finger and some lubricating jelly tomorrow. honeysuckle hens
Thanks so much. We have done that so far tonight (cleaned her and put her inside in a box). Is this a common problem, what can cause it? Do you think she will be ok?? Will she be ok to lay afterwards??? Thanks
Redwing
various things can cause a prolapse, sometimes its just one of those things though Egluntine has given good advice, if in the morning you cannot get the prolapse back n (sugar or haemorrhoid cream would shrink it if its swollen) you will need to get her to a vet If you do a search on prolapses here you will find more info Do not be tempted to put her back with the others until all signs of swelling and blood are gone or the others will peck at her bottom Good luck with it x

honeysuckle hens
Poor Hebrides.... The prolapsed ovilduct kept coming out so we took her to the vets. He was prepared to operate after her next egg which was on its way, but with limited chance of long term sucess and much expense, so off to the big hen house in the sky unfortunately... Will miss the blue eggs for breakfast....
