johncunningham01 Posted August 12, 2009 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Hi All One of my four girl (Matilda) has a bit of a messy bum. The best way I can describe it is that the downy type feathers at her rear end all llok a bit thread bear and stringy. Have had her for coming up to three weeks now and this has appeared over the last day or so. I can't see any mites, cuts but not entirely sure what I am looking for. She is not that easy to pick up but I can do with perseverence and a lot of clucking from her!!! John On a slightly different note my white hen (Dorothy loves her dust baths. As a result she is lookimg a bit grey!. Will she clean herself and return to her loveley white self or will I need to bit the bullet and try and bath her. Plum Posted August 12, 2009 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Hi, it could just be a soiled bum or it could be lice eggs so if I was you I would wash her bum then treat for lice in case. And soon after that she will enjoy a dust bath and look just as tatty and your white one will be grey again. It's part of the game they play with you. chelsea Posted August 13, 2009 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Lice or worms can sometimes cause a messy bum so give her the onceover for lice and if not wormed recently a course of Flubenvet will be good. I only ask because one of mine had similar symptoms...wet behind and the feathers were stringy, and was passing clear fluid with the feces, but other than that fine. The vet said she was fine, fecal was clean and she was her perky self, but a week later died overnight. Not to worry you, because it could be worms or something else. johncunningham01 Posted August 14, 2009 Author Share Posted August 14, 2009 Hi All Have only had the girls for three weeks today and all were treated for mites whilst I was there. Not sure how often I should do this. There is nothing I can see except a few flies around or in the house itself. I have bought a flitrap to deal with those. Three of the girls are fine. Two are laying reasonably regularly now. One is producing normal poo which alternates with what looks like semi formed yolk. I assume she is soon to lay. Matilda however (a Marran) has quite loose yellow yolky type poo. One has had some clear liqiuidy type but not sure if it is her. She is diffucult to pick up but can do so with perseverence. Will bathe her tomorrow and try and have a better look. I have ordered worming powder and also a pellet form from the Omlet shop. (The powder is the type to sprinkle in the house and dust bath).
