Help & advice for a chicken newbie please xx

Recommended Posts

Hiya, this is my first eva post on a forum so sorry in advance for any mistakes!!! :anxious:

I got 2 Isa Browns about 3wks ago at POL they were about 18-20wks old. They have seemed to settle in fine & have taken to me quite well, follow me about & peck me probably coz they knw i feed them, still no eggs tho

I've trawled every forum i can & bought everything suggested thats good for hens but i'm a bit worried as last week when i was out pooper scooping  i noticed a worm in 1 of their poo, dunno wich one but i decided to go ahead with flubavet as the worms were present & now i've found poo which looks bloody & a worm in it & it smelled awful :vom:

anyway is this normal? or could it be cocci? also one of my hens had really runny poo just now & again & she had a sticky bum as my son called it  so i bathed her in warm water just washing the sticky feathers for a few days & she seems fine today. I have there coop with a run inside another run but they just fly over & roam around the garden which doesn't bother me so i've just started leaving it open & save them flying over but their main run/area is on stones/chips as is most of garden but i have a large grass area also.

Anyway this is my daily routine so if i'm doing something wrong can you tell me please.

I let them out first thing in morn & feed them layers pellets with a tiny bit of garlic through it, i was giving them water with ACV in it but they weren't drinking it so stopped couple days ago. I clean their coop bedding out everyday & once a week spray coop & surrounding area with poultry sheild, i also put a red mite, lice, flea powder around the coop & straight onto the birds. Late afternoon i give them some mixed corn & for past week grapes with flubavet on coz they take it better that way. I have also given them porridge & natural yoghurt, not all in same day just as treats now & again. Then everynight i replace their bedding, clean their feeders & replace water, pooper scoop garden & pen & then disinfect whole garden when their in bed.

Am i just worrying for nothing? I have a box full of stuff & unsure when to give it or give it at all, mainly poutry drink, poultry spice.

Thanks so much for any advice

Welcome to the forum :D . Sorry to hear about your worries :( .

To be honest, it sounds to me like you're doing everything exactly right (and even doing much more than most in the cleaning department  ).

When you worm hens, I believe the worms do come out in their poos so I suspect that's what happening. I've not experienced this myself though, so hopefully someone more expert will come along soon :) .

As they have obviously had quite a worm burden, it might be worth worming them again in 3 weeks. I would suggest adding the Flubenvet to food rather than using the grape method though as it is supposed to be fed thoughout the day.

Weigh out 2kg of food

Remove 1 cup full of food and add to it one 6g level measure (scoop) of Flub. Mix well. Remove a slightly larger amound of food from the 2kg and add the cupful af mixed food and Flub. Mix well. Contine to add larger and larger amount from the 2kg to make sure the Flub get well mixed in.

You now have 2kg of medicated feed.

Feed your chickens using only this food for 7 days. If you run out, make up another batch.

This is how Flubenvet 1% is designed to be fed I know lots use the grape method but it will be less effective. Large birds will eat more and therefore take more wormer. Dont forget that seeing no worms in poo doesn't mean that your chickens don't have them. The poo may just be hooching in microscopic eggs instead of live worms :vom:

Thank you for your replys

I'm just coming to the end of the 7 day treatment for flubenvet but was gonna treat again in 3 weeks so i'll defo do it the right way :D

:lol::lol::lol::lol: As for the cleaning, think that might just fizzle out & i might not be as neurotic especially with the winter coming in.

Do you think i should treat for cocci anyway?

Cheers :D

from what I've read about cocci, it tends to affect younger birds at a few weeks old. Hybrids that have been sold commercially are treated for cocci when they're young. It's private breeders who don't usually vaccinate or treat for cocci.

i would think your chooks would be okay for that - keep up the worm treatment and I'll think they'll be fine!

welcome!
