Price of Silkies

Recommended Posts

I was in Notcutts Garden Centre this morning and noticed that they had some white Silkie chooks that were £45 each. I'm not sure how much people pay for these from breeders but I thought this was expensive to say the least.

I have been thinking about a couple of new additions since I lost Charlotte three weeks ago and I have a fancy for white chickens. I was thinking about more hybrids though, maybe a Light Sussex and a Speckledy but the Silkies were really cute.

If anyone knows how much Silkies usually are I would be interested to hear.

Regards,

Brenda

As Silkies are pure breeds I would expect to see pullets for sale at somewhere between £15 and £35, the price varys so much as quality and breeders vary as much!

Nottcutts are effectively the middleman and will charge accordingly so you are better off going direct to a breeder

Silkies are very popular, I have seen a single one go for £65 at auction

I bought two 9 week old silkie pullets this weekend for 8 pounds each. In my experience, you are much better off approaching breeders directly than going to large scale organisations. Practical Poultry lists breeders by area, and you can google breeder lists as well. I also keep pekins, and have never paid more than 15 pounds for a bird.

Thanks to everyone who has replied regarding the price of Silkies. I was not looking at the chooks in Notcutts with any intention of buying, I was just curious because I had heard that they were selling chickens.

When I am ready to buy I intend to go to Merrydale Poultry in Leicester, although I must admit I keep putting it off because I am a little nervous about the introductions.

Brenda
