Pond Fish

Recommended Posts

Hi

Does anyone have any idea what type of fish I could put in my natural pond it is about 140foot long and 40foot wide and 30foot deep lots of iris and reeds etc a few mallards lots of wildlife frogs etc

It has a mud bottom. I was thinking is it Tench?? and also will a heron take up to what size fish?? So I can buy jaws size if need be?

Well, a pond that size should be big enough for most of the stillwater fish; carp (common, mirror or crucian as well as the already mentioned koi), tench, roach, rudd, bream. Did you want ornamental or a little more natural?

Fish like chub and barbel are better off in faster flowing water, and whilst pike and perch could also do well, they'll probably decimate the other species and it's a bit difficult to "unintroduce" a species after you've put it in once. Catfish would love the mucky bottom, but could easily become too invasive, as would grass carp. You could stock some trout, but the slower moving water would mean they'll taste a bit muddy when you catch them.

Heron statues will probably do very well, but don't forget that the fish mentioned above are naturally camouflaged, so your stocks will suffer far less than if you stick with brightly coloured fish like golden bream or goldfish.

Thanks for all the replies I did think about a catfish but worried it would eventually take over..cant do pike as we have wild ducks etc ..my hadnt thought of trout...tasting muddy more like of duck muck!

I think I will have a look at the carp..I know once before Iput in some small goldfish types and the wonderful heron had a field day! As you say..I want a more natural camouflage will have a look into those ones we have a big fish shop near Henlow so will go and see what they have.

I sitll have no idea what HRH has in her lakes they were monsters..sort of blackgrey with a goldie back in the sunshine..about 2.5foot long! Dont know what they were?

thanks indie :)

I wasn't actually making either....or suggestions. Carp, roach, rudd, bream and tench will all quite happily coexist. In fact, if you have a chat with your local angling club, they'd probably be able to tell you which of their waters most closely resembles your pond's habitat, and therefore what fish they stock there.

Probably carp. Carp, especially large ones, love cruising on the surface in sunny weather. In fact, if you drop some bread on the surface, you can often hear the plughole sound as they suck the food into their mouths like a hoover.

Carp grow to fit their surroundings, which is one reason that goldfish in a bowl will never grow to be large fish. Left to their own devices, though, carp put into your pond could quite happily grow to a substantial size.

We have ghost koi in our pond. We used to have some pretty black and white ones, but they are dozy and like to sunbather near the surface. Mr Heron just couldn't resist  The ghost koi are great, still see them a lot, but not as noticeable to the heron!

HI

Thanks for the responses, I ended up spending £50 at Henlow Koi Carp. We got 14 fish and they actually recommended Goldfish for our needs. Very helpful & my what expensive monster fish..phew some really pricy!

Seems Koi is an art

I have put some pics of the pond in the duck section on a recent post.." I have some ducks sort of"...my posting of pics is painful..my son despairs so if you want a nose they are on that thread

sorry..couldnt put son through the up loading with mum experience for a while  indie
