chickenopolis
I have recently bought some of the above for our girls as an afternoon treat - they can't get enought of it. It says that you can use this to get them used to feeding from your hands - but that has never been the problem with our girls. I think they are just greedy! Does anyone else feed this product to their girls?? I don't want to load them up on treats and for them not to eat their regular food, but I don't think a treat every afternoon is a bad thing do you? They are also very partial to dried mealworms - is it OK to feed them live ones? And if so, how many is "the right amount" for one sitting??? Sorry for the questions, but we are new to chicken keeping and want to do the right thing by our ladies. Thanks.
Eggy-Bread
Hi, an afternoon treat is absolutely fine. The main thing is to ensure they have their pellets/mash in the morning as that'll give them what they need. Most chooks go mad for mealworms - of either kind - but I only have the dried ones cos I can't stand the thought of live wriggly ones I usually grab a good handful and scatter them round so the girls can have a good scratch for them. chickenopolis
Thank you for your advice. You have a "Gloria" too! It's a good name.
coco
I got a box of live mealyworms when I got pinkies for our snake, as I couldn't stand having them in the house I just tipped the whole box straight into the run, the girls loved them and they were gome in about a minute. I have decided that when I go for pinkies once a month I'll get a tub of mealyworms as well so they can be a monthly treat. I pulled my broccoli up today as it was full of caterpillars, the girls spent a good couple of hours playing with it. got rid of the caterpillars as well. PS. I also feed dried mealyworms [meant for wild birds] and they go down well.
