maryeadrian
I need help. Experience, suggestions, anything! I've posted on the US site as well, but know there are lots of experienced people over here, too. I had 3 4 day old chicks on March 16th. The EE died on June 3rd of apparant respiratory disorder almost overnight. That left 2. One turned out to be a rooster and went to a friend's place, leaving me with one. I got an 8 week old from a different breeder to add to my remaining chicken who was 12 weeks old. Two months later the last original chicken died. The vet didn't know what it was. She died within a day or two, but different symptoms. This one expelled alot of clear liquid in her feces. Then I find out the rooster died the very same day after vomiting clear, smelly fluid. Again, different symptoms. That leaves me with the chicken from a different breeder. She's 20 weeks old now and seemingly healthy. Quite fiesty, actually. My question is...how long to quarantine? When should I add new hens? DO I add new hens? I'm at a loss for what to do next. My remaining one is so lonely. We've added mirrors and she keeps herself company! Any experience, suggestions are more than welcome. I'm really at a loss of what to do! Thank you!
Egluntyne
Sorry to hear it. I reckon she's been in quarantine long enough. If it was infectious, it would have affected by now. If she were mine, I would get her a couple of point of lay companions asap. Some people keep lone hens successfully, but generally, they do much better as part of a gang. Some tips about managing intros **here**. Good luck.
maryeadrian
Thanks, Egluntine. I thought maybe she'd be OK by now, but I have little experience in this. I agree, she needs companions and as soon as possible. I really appreciate your response!

Christian
I agree with Egluntine, get a couple of friends for her. Good luck with the intros.
maryeadrian
Thanks, Christian. I just put in my order for 2. I also found out this afternoon that the breeder where i got the original 3, although reputable, was shut down for awhile do to disease. She was finding the source and fixing the problem before openning up again. At least I now know for sure it wasn't me. Whew!
