lozboz
I have only had my hens for a few months and i am just wondering if i am doing the right thing letting my hens wander around in the rain? They do have shelter provided so they can get out of the rain and stay warm if they need to but they seem quite happy wandering around doing their own merry thing. Wondering if i need to think of something for them for when the winter months kick in as it will probably be raining all day every day. vikpow
mine are exactly the same! ive had them for 3 months and they free range all day, i leave the run door open and they have plenty of trees to shelter under but when it rains they just wander round getting soaked and end up staning by the patio doors waiting to come into the kitchen Im a bit worred about the winter tho especially when its cold but as they've been free ranging all day since we had them i cant really leave them in the run all day. Old Speckled Hen
Rain? What rain? I just get mine back into the coop an hour earlier than they would go in left to their own devices which gives them some time to dry off.
lozboz
That makes me feel better that someone elses chickens are as daft as mine. Ha ha. When i first got my girls they all had colds so i contacted someone and she told me to feed them live bio yogurt for four days and this really worked. She also said they probably got the cold from getting wet, so i guess the answer is to get the yogurt at the ready!!
Space Chick
When its really bucketing down I don't let my girls out, it is today and they are all shouting at me I'm hoping it eases later so they can have an hour out, but they have loads to do in their WIR so should be happy enough
dippy bird
Mine are just as bad, they have access to their coop but they choose to stand in the rain My current run isn't covered so I have just put a small paddling pool over one end to just provide them with a little bit of shelter.Helps a little bit I guess? Penguin
I've seen on another post someone who has put corrugated plastic over the run so that the light gets in but the rain doesn't so we're off to B&Q on Saturday to buy the necessary so that the girls don't get too wet during the day with this lovely Autumn weather we are having. On that note, we were out feeding them cabbage in the rain yesterday and Andrew asked if we had an umbrella. I told him where it was and he came out with it and promptly held it over the girls ... he's smitten!
jkl
none of mine seem bothered with the rain. Its a bit windy here at the moment and its quite funny seeing their feathers blowing about! On that note, we were out feeding them cabbage in the rain yesterday and Andrew asked if we had an umbrella. I told him where it was and he came out with it and promptly held it over the girls ... - good effort!! love the picy OSH ! Time for a brew and a sit in the WIR with the chooks cheers
Forge Cottage
Our eglu and run are inside an electric fence pen. We have a tarp over the wire run and they go in and stand under it in the rain... That is if they cannot come in and play in our kitchen! They tend not to go in their house to keep dry. They obviously think that is just for sleeping and laying! Funny things
Penguin
Check out the new rainhouse ...
eggregiousness
My young cochins run straight into their Chicube when the rain starts. It's quite funny - I don't need to work out whether it's raining or not any more - I just check to see where the chikkies are
