Is it OK to place my run over stones \ shingle? Everyone mentions bark but is anyone using stones. Thanks

I haven't heard of anyone keeping chooks on stones

 

We have some pea stones near our patio, my girls love digging around in it. The problem is that whole area has now become a hideous mess of mud

You can keep them on gravel, they love digging in it ... but it's going to be quite difficult to clean out, and they'll kick it everywhere. Something you can shovel out and compost every so often is probably easier.

you can somtimes get unlucky if it's the sort of gravel that has sharp edges and if they jump around in it they can cut their feet on it (happened to me)

The gravel is all pebble sized and there are no sharp edges. For cleaning we were hoping to spray with water and soak all the poo down to the soil below (about 3-4 inches) would this be OK.

That would probably work but it might get very muddy because they do dig alot. Alot of this depends on what type of soil its on if it's clay then your going to have a big problem but if it's the sort that will soak stuff in then you probably won't.

If I have to create a permanent run I am planning to try gravel. My soil is a lovely sandy loam - can't think why I'm such a rubbish gardener really - which does not puddle easily. I wondered whether gravel would work - just hosing it down on a daily basis so all the rubbish breaks down in the soil inderneath.
